To check for play in the steering system, the driver should slowly and gently turn the steering wheel from side to side with the vehicle stationary. This controlled movement allows for precise detection of the point at which the steering wheel moves without the directional wheels following the movement, thus revealing any existing play. If the steering wheel is turned quickly, the inertia and speed of the movement prevent a clear perception of the exact moment the wheels begin to turn, making it difficult to identify small amounts of play. On the other hand, manually shaking the directional wheels is neither the appropriate nor safe method to assess play from the driving position, nor does it simulate the real behavior of the steering mechanism actuated by the steering wheel.
